MY PHILOSOPHY

The being that I bring into a school and its classrooms is one that is centred on understanding what it means to be human, and creating a learning environment based on this understanding. Although the specifics may shift from time to time, my overarching belief, based on Abraham Maslow’s work, is that humans need safety, belonging, and self-worth in order to be the most positive versions of themselves. In order to provide students with an education that I believe they all deserve, I allow them to see my character through genuine conversations, ensuring all dialogue between students is respectful, allowing opportunities for myself to be vulnerable, appreciating my students by saying a simple, “Thank you,” apologizing when mistakes are made, and having all-encompassing “laugh-out-loud” moments. To me, this is what it means to be human, and how relationships based on respect and empathy are formed. These relationships allow students to feel safe in a school, give them a sense of belonging to the community within a school and its classrooms, and make them feel and behave as though they are somebody - a somebody who is cared for and who is going to achieve great things through the education they are being given each day.

Taking each day as an opportunity to build relationships and to teach young minds how be positive contributors to the world that they inhabit is how I express my belief of what teaching is. By being what I understand to be human, I believe I am providing students with opportunities to be the best versions of themselves. This, I believe is the education that all individuals deserve.
